Google is doing its part in the open source mobile phone revolution with Androidâ„¢ and the open handset alliance.
Androidâ„¢ is an mobile handset platform delivered under the Apache version 2.0 open source license.
Google isn’t the first to try for an open mobile handset platform, though it sure has some weight to throw around with the members of the handset alliance.
OpenMoko was introduced as an open mobile phone platform in 2006 by FIC (First International Computer, inc.), owner of Everex. OpenMoko is currently limited to one phone.
Regardless of their intentions, I hope that all open source groups can work together to untether the world of mobile handsets from the stone age.
