Home ➲ apple & mac & repair ➲ MacBook MagSafe Power Adapter Repair

Woke up to a plugged in, battery drained MacBook.
I had read about defective MagSafe power adapters, though this was my first contact with one.
The end that connects to the computer had started to fray, and became very hot when an intermittent connection was made.
After the long wait until Apple tech support woke up, I was instructed to buy a new power brick.
Two months after my first year of MacBook ownership lapsed, and not feeling like whining or forking over $79.00, I decided to repair my scorched adapter.
Off to Google and found a plethora of forums to choose from.
This was not an isolated issue, though the common solution seemed to be “buy a new one”.
Here’s the step by step pictorial process I used to repair my MacBook MagSafe power adapter…
…that no one else should even think of doing… at all… ever… just buy a new one… don’t electrocute yourself.
I would be happy to add comments to any photos or steps upon request.

Absolutely incredible! I was thinking about exactly this last night, and I just stumbled on to it!

Thank you for taking the time to put this up.
My wife had been yanking it out by the wire, though I don’t think it was the cause of failure – looks like it failed at the point where the cable would want to bend.
So I got her a ‘new’ (real) one off of fleebay, at a good price, actually the new style ‘looks’ more robust.
Then thought this must be repairable, found this, so now a spare on hand.
I wasn’t able to get the outer case off quite as neat as you!

Hey man, any tips on how to get the plastic cover of the connector to slide down?

Not sure. This was for a 2008 white MacBook.

The rubber collar catches on the cord, so make sure it travels with the cover. I just pried the cover from both sides until it let go using a small slot screw driver.

I’ve just finished soldering my Magsafe thanks to your tutorial.
Sorry for ignoring the (no one else should even think of doing it… at all… ever…) bit.
It worked greatly!
Mine would only charge my Macbook on certain positions, which had been doing my heading for some time.
Peace to mind at last, the light is on!!!!
Thanks.
